The story that changed everything
A ward of healing, a miracle of love
Dr. Ihaleakalá Hew Len was a Hawaiian therapist who, in the 1980s, took a position at Hawaii State Hospital — a ward for the criminally mentally ill. Patients were dangerous, staff turnover was constant, and the environment was one of despair.
Dr. Hew Len never saw the patients directly. Instead, he reviewed each patient's file and worked on himself — repeating the four phrases of Ho'oponopono, taking 100% responsibility for what he found within. Over four years, patients who had been shackled began walking freely. Medications were reduced. The ward was eventually closed because the patients had healed.
His method was not therapy in the conventional sense. It was love — directed inward, offered outward, and trusted completely.
"I was simply cleaning the part of me that had created what I was seeing in them."
