Our philosophy
Ancient wisdom for modern healing
Ho'oponopono is a Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness — a path back to love, peace, and wholeness.
What is Ho'oponopono?
Ho'oponopono (ho-o-pono-pono) is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. Traditionally practiced by Hawaiian healers, it was used to restore harmony within families and communities by clearing shared memories and returning to a state of love.
The word itself means 'to make right' or 'to correct an error.' At its heart, Ho'oponopono teaches that everything we experience in our outer world is a reflection of our inner world — and that by healing ourselves, we heal our relationships and our reality.
The modern practice, as taught by Dr. Ihaleakalá Hew Len, distills this wisdom into four simple phrases that carry profound transformative power: I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.
The four healing phrases
These four phrases are not spoken to another person — they are spoken to the Divine, to the universe, to the deepest part of yourself. They are a prayer of release, a clearing of the memories that bind us.
I'm sorry
Acknowledging that something within you has contributed to the pain or problem — taking radical responsibility without blame.
Please forgive me
Asking for forgiveness from the Divine and from yourself, releasing the need to understand or analyze.
Thank you
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to heal, and for the love that is always present beneath the surface.
I love you
The most powerful phrase of all — love is the ultimate cleanser, the force that dissolves all that is not true.
The story that changed everything
Dr. Ihaleakalá Hew Len
In the 1980s, Dr. Ihaleakalá Hew Len was hired as a staff psychologist at the Hawaii State Hospital for the criminally insane. The ward housed patients considered so dangerous that staff routinely called in sick, quit, or walked through the ward with their backs to the walls.
Dr. Hew Len never saw patients in individual therapy sessions. Instead, he would review each patient's file and then work on himself — using the Ho'oponopono practice to heal whatever within him had created or mirrored the patient's reality.
Within four years, the ward was transformed. Patients who had been shackled were allowed to walk freely. Those on heavy medication had their doses reduced. Many were eventually released. The ward was eventually closed — not because it failed, but because it was no longer needed.
Dr. Hew Len's work demonstrated something radical: that by healing ourselves, we can heal the world around us. We are not separate from what we see. We are responsible — not in a guilt-laden way, but in a deeply empowered one.
"I was simply healing the part of me that had created them."
Core principles
Total responsibility
You are 100% responsible for everything in your life — not because you are to blame, but because you have the power to heal it.
Zero limits
The goal is to reach a state of zero — zero memories, zero programs, zero limitations — where inspiration can flow freely from the Divine.
Cleaning, not coping
Ho'oponopono doesn't ask you to analyze or understand your problems. It asks you to clean them — to release the memories that replay as suffering.
Love as the path
Love is not a sentiment — it is the fundamental force of the universe. When we return to love, everything else falls into place.
Why Kindred Hula?
Kindred Hula was born from a deep reverence for this practice and a desire to make it accessible to anyone, anywhere. We believe that healing is not a luxury — it is a birthright.
The word 'kindred' speaks to the connection we share — with each other, with our ancestors, with the earth. 'Hula' honors the Hawaiian tradition from which this wisdom flows, a tradition of storytelling, movement, and the expression of the soul.
Our app is being built as a sacred space — a daily companion for your Ho'oponopono practice. Guided meditations, practice tools, and a community of fellow travelers on the path of healing.
